For our Spring library visit, on Friday 3rd May 2019, librarian and special collections curator Gustavo Grandal Montero will host a small group of UoL Bibliophiles at the Chelsea College of Arts Library, where he will share some of the special collections. Gustavo’s own current research is centred on concrete poetry and some of you may have seen the exhibition he curated at Chelsea Space last year, Astro-Poems and Vertical Group Exercises – http://www.chelseaspace.org/archive/csa-info.html – which drew on the collections at Chelsea and beyond.
Chelsea holds one of the first and still one of the finest institutional collections of artists’ books in the UK, established by Clive Philpott in 1970, and it is always a real delight to sit in a room surrounded by real treasures from the 20th and 21st century which are still used by students, alumni and other researchers today – many of whom are working artists. Another significant collection they hold is the African-Caribbean, Asian and African Art in Britain Archive. In recent years, members of the library team have been involved in a range of decolonisation projects.
In short, this visit is ideal for Bibliophiles with an interest in modern and contemporary book collecting, or, indeed, for anyone who wants to learn more about the diversity and range of materials from the last 100 years and the joys and challenges of acquiring, conserving and providing access to them within a very active community of academics and practising artists.

The campus is right next to Tate Britain, so attendees may wish to take the opportunity to visit the galleries there. As usual, we shall probably retire to a nearby hostelry after the visit (buying our own drinks).
